Catholic Church in the Pacific Northwest collection [manuscript], 1841-1890.

Collection created by the Oregon Historical Society concerning activities of the Roman Catholic Church in the Pacific Northwest. The bulk of the collection consists of photocopies and microfilm of documents, mostly in French, from the Archives Historique Oblates, Ottawa, Canada, including: "Notice historiques et statistique sur la congregation des missionaires Oblats de Marie Immaculee (3 printed reports, 1853-1858, all in folder 2); "Escape of Father Chirouse during the Cayuse War of 1855," probably written by Gaspard Janin, O.M.I. (folder 2); and 53 letters from Fathers Modeste Demers and Francis Norbert Blanchet to Edmond Langevin, 1851-1868, some of which have typescripts accompanying photocopies of originals (in folders 3-4). Also includes the following original materials: Francis Norbert Blanchet's copies of "Errata of the Protestant Bible, 1841," with his notes (in folder 6); set of pamphlets collected by Blanchet regarding church matters in Canada, 1855-1876 (in folder 7); and letter to Archbishop William H. Gross, January 27, 1890 (in folder 8). documents on British Columbia and Oregon Catholic missions, including correspondence of Francis Norbert Blanchet, Augustine Blanchet, Modeste Demers, Pascual Richard, Louis Rossi, Jean Baptiste Brouillet, Eugene Casimer Chirouse, and others; documents from the Holy Congregation of the Propagation of the Faith, 1841-1865; and index to correspondence by Francis G. Morrisey, O.M.I., with explanatory notes and lists.
